Jessica Simpson: Marrying Nick Lachey Was a Money Mistake

August 2024 · 2 minute read

Who says love don’t cost a thing? During an appearance on CNBC’s Closing Bell on Thursday, Sept. 10, Jessica Simpson joked that marrying first husband Nick Lachey was one of the worst financial decisions she ever made.

The star, 35, was on the business news show in honor of the 10th anniversary of her fashion line. Asked by host Kelly Evans to name some of her biggest money mistakes, either personal or professional, Simpson at first struggled to come up with an answer.

“The biggest money mistakes? I don’t know. For some reason I thought of my first marriage!” she told Evans, laughing.

“That’s actually a common answer, believe it or not,” Evans replied.

Simpson and Lachey, 41, were married from 2002 to 2006, during which time they starred in their own MTV reality show, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. (Who can forget the Chicken of the Sea incident?)

After their divorce nearly 10 years ago, the 98 Degrees singer moved on with Vanessa Minnillo, whom he wed in 2011. They have two kids, son Camden, 2, and daughter Brooklyn, 8 months. Simpson, for her part, dated Tony Romo and John Mayer before finding love with now-husband Eric Johnson, with whom she has daughter Maxwell, 3, and son Ace, 2.

Last year, Lachey told Jenny McCarthy that he and his ex were no longer in touch. “I wouldn’t say it’s friends and I wouldn’t say it’s enemies — there is just no contact,” he explained. “We both moved on with our lives. It’s not animosity, it’s not friendship, it’s just kind of nothing.”
