Highlights

Like Third Eye Blind and Dave Matthews Band, Nine Inch Nails is one of those bands from the '90s that everyone remembers. Lead singer Trent Reznor is also impressive because he has found another music-related career in recent years: writing film scores. He wrote beautiful songs for Aaron Sorkin's The Social Network alongside his bandmate Atticus Ross.

While he has definitely worked with other artists over the years, Trent Reznor fought with Marilyn Manson. There was also the time when Courtney Love alleged that Reznor treated her badly. Does this mean that Trent Reznor has had trouble getting along with his Nine Inch Nail bandmates? Here's the real story about his relationships with the other band members.

Are Nine Inch Nails Members Trent Reznor And Atticus Ross Friends?

Nine Inch Nails members Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor have worked together for many years and fans are always excited by their movie scores. It turns out that they have cultivated both a friendship and a great working relationship. For many artists, it's a dream to find someone who understands them and what they are trying to express to the world.

In December 2022, Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor talked about film scores in an interview with Aframe.oscars.org. Reznor said, "We really grew to enjoy the intense collaborative."

He described writing songs for Nine Inch Nails and for movies and shared that they feel differently about the artistic process. He said of writing songs for movies, "We found we really enjoy going on a six-month to 18-month — sometimes longer — journey of intense creation, where we're not in control, where we're in service to."

In contrast, when writing for Nine Inch Nails, "We can get very insular and kind of become hermits."

Trent Reznor is credited as a co-writer on a Limp Bizkit song but how does he really feel about Fred Durst's famous band?

When talking about their relationship, Ross and Reznor have never said that they had any big fights. When they are interviewed, publications always refer to them as friends.

In December 2010, the Nine Inch Nails singer spoke to The Quietus about being hired to write the score for The Social Network. Reznor explained that it made sense to talk to Ross about the project since they were close. Considering how much fans love this film score, it's fun to hear the behind-the-scenes story of how it came about.

Reznor said, "Our relationship is about ten years deep, based on a friendship and also a working relationship. We started with Atticus being a programmer for Nine Inch Nails, with How To Destroy Angels it's more of a variation on that where we're all working together and making a conscious effort to be more democratic and communal. When the opportunity to do this movie came up Fincher reached out to me, we'd had a good relationship over the years and had asked me if I was interested."

Andrew Garfield has not starred in many films better than The Social Network, but he was mortified when he first saw his performance in the movie.

Reznor continued, "Atticus and I were in a very healthy working flow together and he just scored Book Of Eli, and with that bit of experience I thought it would be helpful to have him involved in this, and we were in a great creative period, so I floated the idea out to him."

Does Trent Reznor Get Along With The Other Nine Inch Nails Band Members?

It seems that Trent Reznor gets along well with some members of Nine Inch Nails, but this isn't the case with everyone.

Ilan Rubin played with Nine Inch Nails in 2008 and 2009 and then came back in 2013. He and Trent Reznor seem to have a strong friendship.

In a 2013 interview with Billboard, Ilan Rubin talked about Nine Inch Nails and explained that Reznor contacted him to see what he would think about becoming part of the band again.

Rubin liked the idea a lot and explained, “He reached out to me a while back asking about availability and interest, and of course I was interested. Joining Nine Inch Nails for the first time was a great coincidence, because it was around that time I started developing an interest in electronic music… so it couldn’t have come at a better time.”

Billboard described Reznor as Rubin's "old friend," which suggests that they have had a great relationship for a long time.

"Everybody Rules The World" was an 80s staple, however, it has a secret dark meaning about the era in which it was released.

As for Reznor's relationships with other band members Robin Finck and Alessandro Cortini, who were also previous members and came back in 2013? While there are no reports of them getting into epic fights, they don't seem to be good friends.

In 2013, The Fader published an oral history of the band and Alessandro Cortini and Robin Finck explained their thoughts about Trent Reznor. It definitely sounds like Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are closer than Reznor, Cortini and Finck.

Finck told a story about how, once, Reznor was upset during a rehearsal for the Self Destruct tour. He began hurling microphones and water in different directions.

Finck was unnerved by this and said, "Rather than tell people what to expect from the shows, he just broke everything until we couldn’t play anymore. I don’t think he was mad at anybody, but it really shook me to the core. The next rehearsal, everything was covered in plastic."

In the same oral history published by The Fader, Alessandro Cortini shared what his relationship was like with Reznor at the time that he became part of Nine Inch Nails.

He said, "When I joined, I’d see Trent at rehearsals, but after he’d disappear fairly quickly. He’s always been dealing with a side of NIN which we don’t really deal with, everything that has to do with the machine and not [the] music. We don’t deal with it because it’s not our business, and because if we did, we’d destroy it."

While fans have been waiting for another album from Nine Inch Nails since "Ghosts V: Together" came out in 2020, Trent Reznor explained in a 2023 interview with Consequence.net that might not happen anytime soon. There is no tension between the bandmates, though.

Reznor said that it's tough to think about going on tour because he has children now. He also said that music has become "a disposable commodity."

The musician explained, “In the context of Nine Inch Nails, in terms of an audience and the culture,” Reznor said, “the importance of music — or lack of importance of music — in today’s world, from my perspective, is a little defeating."
